How to Clean Alloy Wheels Without Damaging the Finish

Wheels are the dirtiest part of any car — and the first thing everyone notices. Brake dust is not ordinary dirt: it consists of hot metal particles from the brake pads that literally weld themselves onto the wheel finish as you drive. The longer they stay, the harder they are to remove, and over time they stain the finish permanently.

What you will need

• smaller detail brushes for the areas around valves and bolts

Step by step

1. Work on dry, cool wheels — never right after driving.
2. Spray the cleaner evenly over the whole wheel and let it work for 2 minutes.
3. Rinse with water.
4. Spray again and go over all surfaces with the microfibre brush; use detail brushes for tight spots.
5. Clean the spokes and the inner barrel with a microfibre cloth or sponge.
6. Rinse thoroughly. Repeat the process for heavy soiling.

Common mistakes

• Cleaning in direct sunlight or on hot wheels. The cleaner dries before it can work and may leave spots. Always work in the shade.
• Aggressive acid cleaners. Cheap, highly acidic products dissolve dirt but gradually dull the finish and destroy ceramic coatings. A mild pH of around 4.5 is the sweet spot — effective yet safe.
• One sponge for wheels and paintwork. Wheel particles are abrasive and will leave micro-scratches on body paint. Keep dedicated tools for wheels.
